The roots of a bean plant are seen with a reddish Martianlike soil Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The soil turned reddish after it was heated to 1,000 degrees to decompose the organic material. UW-Stout Associate Professors Matt Kuchta, physics, and Mandy Little, biology, are teaching courses in which they examine extreme soil and growing conditions. They’re doing it using their own Martianlike “Hab,” or habitat. The experiments are inspired by the movie “The Martian.” (UW-Stout photo by Brett T. Roseman)
